About the ACPS and Professional Chemistry in Saskatchewan
The mission of the ACPS is self-regulation of the chemistry profession in Saskatchewan.
Self-regulation exists in several other provinces. This takes the form of right-to-title (P.Chem., or C. Chem., in BC, AB, and ON) or exclusive right-to-practice (chimist, in Quebec). Increasingly, provinces are moving to identify qualified persons for specific tasks (e.g. certification of laboratory analyses for contaminated sites).
The ACPS is working towards legislation that will provide accredited members with exclusive use of the P. Chem. title and designation as qualified persons for work that depends on the expertise of chemists.
Self-regulation of chemistry will mean:
- That professional chemists are recognized through formal evaluation of their credentials, training & experience.
- That professional chemists are bound to perform their work to the highest ethical standards.
- That professional chemists have a responsibility for on-going professional development
- That professional chemists are subject to discipline if their work does not meet the standards of the profession
The primary purpose of self-regulation is protection of the public, but will also mean more opportunity for chemists to work as professionals and peers in support of other regulated professions (engineers, agrologists, etc).
